#10. Dane Howitz

November 10, 2009

(Wow, 10 out of 30 – one third of the way there!  I never thought I’d make it this far.  Here’s hoping I can keep it up!)

DaneHowitz

Dane Howitz is not your conventional detective.  He is a paranormal investigator, whose services are in demand all across America.  From hauntings to alien abductions, when a case is deemed too outlandish for the regular authorities, people hire Howitz.  Typically, his job has involved disproving the supernatural, finding a rational explanation lurking behind supposed otherworldly phenomena.  As such, Dane had become quite discontent with his line of work, seeing himself as little more than a private dick for loonies and idiots.

But that all changed with a recent case, the alleged demonic possession of an old man in Texas.  Dane was sceptical, assuming the man was merely suffering from dementia, but a local priest convinced him to assist in an exorcism.  The exorcism was botched horribly, and the old man died.  Ever since, Dane has changed.  He finds himself prone to mood swings and blackouts, and sometimes hears voices in his head.  He fears he is going through a nervous breakdown, or it is the onset of some kind of schizophrenia.  The priest believed that the demon inhabiting the old man had passed onto him, but Dane dismissed that idea.  He certainly wouldn’t agree to an exorcism, something inside him told him that would be a terrible idea.

Currently, Dane Howitz is in New Orleans, investigating a series of suspicious deaths and disappearances, each coinciding with the full moon.  He has to put his personal issues aside, and prove that the whisperings of a werewolf being responsible are completely untrue…

He’s like Mulder and Scully if you squeezed them together into a guy that looks like OJ.
